Gregory D. Spin, DO founded Summit Nephrology Medical Group in 2005 with Drs. Bhat and Thornton and has served as its Chief Executive Officer. He completed his clinical training at UC Davis Medical Center, including his Internal Medicine residency, a year as Chief Resident, and his Nephrology Fellowship.
Dr. Spin sees patients in Summit Nephrology’s Auburn office, serving communities including Grass Valley, Auburn, and the surrounding Sierra foothills. He continues to care for patients across multiple care settings and maintains an active role in dialysis care within the region.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Spin is deeply engaged in advancing value-based kidney care. He serves in a physician leadership role supporting value-based care programs in collaboration with DaVita across the West Coast, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma. In this capacity, he partners with clinical and operational teams to improve patient outcomes, enhance care coordination, and advance sustainable care delivery models. He is a strong advocate for a “circular economy” approach to healthcare—one that aligns incentives to deliver better outcomes while supporting long-term system sustainability.
Dr. Spin has been actively involved in his local medical community, including prior service as Vice Chief of Staff at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital and as a Medical Director within the dialysis space. He has also contributed to his broader community through service on the Board of Trustees for Live Oak Waldorf School in Meadow Vista.
He lives in Nevada County with his wife, a family physician with Sutter Medical Group. Together they have raised two children in the area. Outside of medicine, he enjoys tennis, running in the Auburn Recreation Area, reading, film, travel, and staying closely connected to his children as they begin their own independent paths.
Dr. Spin has taken great pride in helping grow Summit Nephrology from a three-physician practice into an 11-provider group, now serving a broad geographic region while maintaining a strong commitment to excellence and individualized patient care.
